The Speicherstadt stands on tens of thousands of oak piles driven into the soft marsh of the Elbe. Construction began in 1883 on the islands of Kehrwieder and Wandrahm, whose residents were cleared to make room. The first blocks opened in 1888; the final ones were completed in 1927. What resulted is the largest contiguous warehouse complex in the world, more than a kilometre of red brick set along tidal canals, and the route that Speicherstadt Hamburg Bootstour tours still trace today. The scheme was commercial before it was picturesque. Hamburg had entered the German Customs Union, and the city needed bonded storage within reach of the quays. Franz Andreas Meyer's engineering office gave the district neo-Gothic gables, glazed ceramic detail and iron shutters — a civic costume for what were, in fact, plain floors of coffee, tea, cocoa, spices and carpet. Each block was built with two faces. One met the street and the cart; the other met the water and the barge. Winches still hang beneath the eaves. Water dictated everything. The Fleete are tidal, rising and falling by roughly three metres, so cargo moved on shallow-draught barkassen low enough to pass under the Kornhausbrücke and the Poggenmühlenbrücke. Wartime bombing destroyed roughly half the fabric in 1943, and the reconstruction that followed copied the original profiles rather than replacing them. Duty-free status ended here in 2003, and the free port itself closed a decade later. The warehouses turned to offices, studios, coffee traders and museums, among them the Speicherstadtmuseum and Miniatur Wunderland. In July 2015 UNESCO inscribed the Speicherstadt together with the neighbouring Kontorhaus District and Chilehaus. The Elbphilharmonie, completed on the brick base of Kaispeicher A in 2017, closed the composition at the western end. Seen from a Fleetfahrt through the canals, the effect is continuous: a nineteenth-century harbour city and its twenty-first-century successor held within a single field of view.
